INTRODUCCION The Lima Contemporary Art Museum (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo -MAC Lima), which opened in January 2013, is a private institution dedicated to the dissemination of modern and contemporary art. Álvaro Roca Rey is the museum’s director. Promoted by the Institute of Contemporary Art (Instituto of Arte Contemporáneo – IAC), MAC Lima puts the leading manifestations of national and international art within the reach of the community through its collection, temporary exhibitions and a variety of educational and cultural programs. MAC Lima is located on a property conceded by the Municipality of Barranco. It has two temporary exhibition halls and a gallery for the IAC collection. In addition, it promotes artistic and cultural activities in the adjacent park. THE COLLECTION MAC Lima mainly contains works of Latin American and European artists, which were obtained beginning in the 1950s. The collection covers abstract expressionism, geometric art, constructivism, conceptual art, optical art and pieces influenced by surrealism and pop art, in addition to works dating from the last few decades. With support from the Heritage Committee, the collection is expanding to offer a significant array of Peruvian and Latin American art. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS The education department views the MAC Lima collection and contemporary art not only from an esthetic perspective but also as a tool for building capabilities and fostering the principles that contribute to the humanistic education of visitors. Guided tours for students Guided tours introduce school and university students to the latest manifestations of contemporary art. Guided tours include a workshop designed around current exhibitions. Sundays at the MAC The artistic experience encourages community interaction. Visit us on Sundays with your family to experience art and to participate in a guided tour and an art workshop, which are included in the admission price. Regular workshops Learning about art allows us to break with routine, to acquire new knowledge and develop new ways of perceiving the world. MAC Lima offers visual art, theatre, art and technology and other workshops for the general public. MAC CLASSROOM An opportunity for creation and dialogue with experts, artists, curators and art critics in which MAC Lima’s temporary exhibitions serve as the starting point for the discussion on contemporary art. MAC Lima is closed on the following holidays: Labor Day (May 1), Thursday and Friday of Easter Week, Christmas (December 24-25) and New Year’s (December 31 and January 1). By Metropolitano bus: get off at the Plaza of Flores station and walk up Carlos Arrieta Street to Grau Ave. THE PARK Admission is free from Monday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pets are not allowed, except for guide dogs. MAC CAFE Relax with a cup of coffee and a lovely view of the ponds and extensive gardens. MAC SHOP Open during museum hours. The shop offers a variety of gift items with designs from museum pieces and the temporary exhibitions, objects designed by Peruvian artists and publications, including specialized books on contemporary art.
